Camael – Tuesday’s Angel

English: Chamuel (Camael) with Cupid, it is sa...

Chamuel (Camael) with Cupid, it is said that Camael is the leader of Cupid, they are both a team, referring to camael as the love Angel, and even Archangel (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Archangel Camael

Also known as Chamuel, Kemuel, Shemuel, Seraphiel,
Camiel, Camiul, Khamael, Camniel, Cancel and Jahoel.

Camael, He Who Sees God, is traditionally regarded
as chief of the Order of Powers and one of the sefiroth.

Camael is ruler of the planet Mars.

One of the governing angels of the seven planets.

Within Cabalistic lore, he is considered to be
one of the ten archangels.

In Druid mythology, Camael was originally
the God of War.

Eliphas Levi, in “The History of Magic”
says Camael personifies divine justice.

Camael is said to be one of the
seven archangels who stand before God.

Clara Clement in her 1898 book
“Angels in Art” regards Camael as the
angel who wrestled with Jacob
and also as the angel who appeared to Jesus
during his agony in the garden of Gethsemane.

Legend tells of Moses destroying the archangel Camael
when this great hierarch tried to prevent the Lawgiver
from receiving the Torah at the hand of God.

A gatekeeper of Heaven, Camael has charge over
twelve-thousand fiery Angels of Destruction,
all posted there with Camael at the portals of the sky.

Camael is Chief of the Angels of Destruction.

Camael governs Heavenly singing.

Camael is responsible for holding in check
Leviathan, the monster of evil who will swallow
the souls of sinners on Judgment Day.

I’ve copied and pasted the text above into today’s post, because I’ve seen this text about Camael circulated widely but nowhere have I been able to find out who the original author is or what source(s) (other than Eliphas Levi) the author has drawn upon for this information. Please get in touch if you know more!

I’m still scratching my head over how Camael and Chamuel can be one and the same… Camael is fierce – a Warrior Prince of Heaven. The crystals I would associate with him are Tiger’s Eye and Red Jasper.

Now Google Chamuel and you will find an angel of soulmate love and romance whose vibration resonates with Rose Quartz. It seems New Age writers have added to the confusion by randomly creating new correspondences.

For instance, Doreen Virtue describes Chamuel (Camael) as the ruling angel of the Zodiac sign Taurus which is a traditionally a sign ruled by Venus (Archangel Anael). In occult circles Camael is known as the Martian ruler of Tuesday, and Mars rules the Fire sign Aries. These two simply can’t be one and the same!

I have a theory about how this confusion came about and I do believe it started way before the era of New Age pop spirituality but more on that tomorrow…

I was reading something about Raguel, and the author was a bit annoyed that, as you mentioned, new age people have changed the way angels are perceived and what they stood for originally. They have also made them all light and fluffy, when originally many, if not most, were actually to be feared.

  2. Well, there’s no coincidence that there is a link between the Seraphim and Dragons… Sugar-coated, fluffy bunny stuff just doesn’t cut it most of the time when it comes to the Messengers of the Divine. :)
