Are Witches Born or Made?

Let’s ask the Tarot! I used the Watcher Angel Tarot for this little reading about a rather weighty issue in the Pagan community…

To me it seems rather obvious that the answer is… well, both. The Hanged Man here makes a strong argument for Witches being born with a unique set of spiritual gifts – especially since it was the first card I pulled. Reading the cards from left to right, I get a sense of forgetting the Path at birth and then being reawakened to it through some crisis with the 5 of Swords.

And then a witch as to be made as well (8 of Pentacles). Because it is entirely possible to ignore one’s calling and to refuse to hone one’s craft.

Interestingly, the quint for this reading adds up to 25/7 – The Chariot, another strong argument for Witches being born.

What’s your take on this?

Faery Blessings,

That makes a lot of sense actually. In my experience it really is the crisis that seems to bring the gifts to the surface.

Funny, I could see the Hanged Man going both ways, and the Chariot, too. If you’re willing to make the sacrifice, or direct your will in that direction, then you can make yourself a witch. Still, I like your directional reading, it makes a lot of sense to me :)

I always see the Hanged Man as taking choice out of the equation… but that could because he’s my Shadow :)
